Biography: Joseph V. Pergolizzi, Jr., MD, is Chief Operating Office of NEMA Research In in Naples, Florida and chairman of the Abstract and Poster Selection Committee for PAIN Week, and a member of the CHANGE PAIN Board. Dr. Pergolizzi completed his residency in anesthesia at Georgetown University School of Medicine and a clinical research fellowship in the Department of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He has served as NEMA CEO since 1997 with global business corporate lead direct responsibilities for turn-key clinical trial management and implementation (Phase I-IV). Dr. Pergolizzi’s research interests focus on acute and chronic pain in adults with a particular focus on pain in the elderly. In the past, Dr. Pergolizzi held positions including the co-founder and chairman of the board for the Association of Chronic Pain Patients, a member of the board of directors and treasurer for the Coalition for Pain Education (COPE), co-founder and director of research at the International Pain Research and Treatment Foundation, and a member of the board of directors of the National Institute of Pain. Dr. Pergolizzi has held various adjunct and/or part-time academic positions and faculty over the past decade. He is the author of over 250 peer-reviewed articles, abstracts, platform presentations and book chapters in his areas of interest and expertise.

Dr. Vater has over 38 years of experience in the field of anesthesiology. Dr. Vater has a great passion in liver transplantation anesthesia and new world challenges - global obesity epidemics and aging. His research interests are Fast-track anesthesia management in liver transplantation; anesthesia for bariatric surgery and obesity; ischemia-reperfusion physiology.

Biography: I was born in Catania (Italy) in 1982. I currently work as Senior Academic Researcher at the University of Catania (Italy). After graduation with honors in Medicine, I trained at the School of Neurology and I got the international PhD at the University of Catania (Italy). As visiting Clinical Research Fellow, I further trained at the Department of Neuroscience, Newcastle University (UK). In 2013 I was selected for a Scientific Fellowship promoted by the European Federation of Neurological Societies (EFNS). From 2013 to October 2018 I worked as Consultant Neurologist at the Oasi Research Institute – IRCCS in Troina (Italy), which is a Collaborating Center of the World Health Organization (WHO). From 2015 to October 2018, I taught Neurology at the Kore University of Enna (Italy). I have authored more than 100 publications in international refereed Journals and Conferences/Meetings, and I also serve as Editor and invited Reviewer of several international Journals. More recently, I also obtained the Master of Science (Level I) in Clinical Research, as well as the National Scientific Qualification as Associate Professor (procedure for the Italian University Professor position recruiting, based on scientific qualification criteria).

Biography: I am board certified in anesthesiology (and Critical Care) and Internal Medicine (and Pulmonary Medicine. I was at the University of Florida for 18 years, leaving to take the Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology in 1994, and finished the 19 years at the University of North Carolina as the Executive Dean for Graduate Medical Education. In New Orleans I now hold the rank of Professor, University of Queensland (AU), and serve as the Clerkship Director for Critical Care, which in Australia includes ED, MICU, SICU, OR anesthesia and NeuroICU. I am also Program Director, Critical Care Medicine Fellowship at Ochsner where I practice. My teaching role is heavily invested in Simulate Learning Scenarios. Due to my resident teaching responsibilities I am also Clinical Professor, Tulane University.

Biography: John F. Bebawy, MD is an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology & Neurological Surgery at Northwestern University. His clinical and research interests and expertise relate to Neuroanesthesia, with a focus on interventions that affect cerebral blood flow and cerebrovascular hemodynamics. Dr. Bebawy completed his Anesthesiology residency and Neurosurgical Anesthesiology fellowship training at Northwestern in 2008, where he is currently faculty and Program Director of the Neurosurgical Anesthesiology Fellowship Program. He is a member of many national and international societies for the advancement of Neurosurgical Anesthesiology, has published widely on various topics in the field, and has spoken at many meetings throughout the world on areas within his expertise. Dr. Bebawy is devoted and committed to the betterment of patient safety through individualized and compassionate clinical care, as well as through his contribution to the scientific community.

Biography: Dr. Tirotta has been an active member of Miami Children’s Hospital medical staff since 1991, practicing with the Department of Anesthesiology; he has served as the Director of Cardiac Anesthesia from November 2002 to July 2017. He has served as Chief of the Department of Anesthesia since July 2017. He also has a clinical appointment with the Department of Anesthesiology at The University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Tirotta received his BA from Cornell University in 1982 and his MD from New York University School of Medicine in 1986. He also received an MBA degree from Columbia University in 1999. Dr. Tirotta completed his internship in Internal Medicine at SUNY at Stony Brook in 1987. He completed his residency training in anesthesiology at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital in 1990; he sub-specialized in pediatric and cardiovascular anesthesia, including heart transplantation.

Biography: Michael W. Lew, M.D., is clinical professor in Department of Anesthesiology at City of Hope National Medical Center. He is a native of Southern California, attended Columbia University in New York prior to graduating magna cum laude from the University of Southern California in 1986. While at USC, he was elected to be a member of Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. Dr. Lew continued his postgraduate training and received his medical degree from the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine in 1990. Dr. Lew completed a residency at the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine, Department of Anesthesiology of which during his last year he was a chief resident. In 1994, he joined the Department of Anesthesiology at City of Hope. In 1995, Dr. Lew became certified as a Diplomat of the American Board of Anesthesiology. Dr. Lew served as the acting chair for the Department of Anesthesiology in 2001 for one and a half years before being chosen to be the chair of the Department of Anesthesiology in 2002. Dr. Lew's research interest focuses around the anesthetic implications of minimally invasive surgery, patient outcomes after surgery, and the use of noninvasive technology in the perioperative period. Dr. Lew is an active alumnus of the University of Southern California where he served on the Board of Governors for the Alumni Association and has a scholarship that bears his name.

Biography: Dr. A. Sassan Sabouri, an instructor at Harvard Medical School. He is a graduate from medical school in Shahid Beheshti Medical University (SBMU) in Tehran, Iran. First, he finished his anesthesiology residency in SBMU. He has gained his major experience by practicing anesthesia in different cities across Iran for 10 years. In 2006, he started his residency in General Surgery in Temple University in Johnstown PA and then Anesthesiology Residency in New York State University at Buffalo NY, where he became one of the chief residents. After graduation from residency he became one of the staff at the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), MA. His clinical innovations are primarily focused on regional anesthesia. Collaboratively, he started General Surgery Regional Service in MGH in 2012. He has had multiple abstracts and presentations in the USA as well as internationally in Iran and India.
